Zorhia Allen

Zorhia Allen was born in 1996 in St Elizabeth, Jamaica. She completed her Bachelors Degree in Art Education at the Edna Manley School of Art.

“Double consciousness is developed based on our lived experiences, how we choose to engage and what we choose to internalize from our lived experiences. This is evident in the way we fashion ourselves. What then becomes the result when we are forced to conform.”

Zorhia’s work questions what influences the idea of wanting to be and the prerequisites of having a sense of belonging. She believes “The way in which we define our identity, physically and physiologically is fused from our colonial past.”

In this piece I am addressing the issue of social stratification in the education system and discrimination through the use of Eurocentric practices. In some institutions discrimination has been masked as discipline and formality. It leaves us to question who owns the power and how this impacts our true identity. How does this create an atmosphere of exclusion in "formal" spaces?
